Rio Recap: Grace Advances in the 800; Johnson Helps USA to Finals to Highlight Day 12

Track & Field

Donn Cabral (Princeton ’12) finished ninth in his second consecutive Olympic steeplechase final, as he ran 8:25.81. His time was .10 seconds faster than his 2012 time in London when he finished eighth at 8:25.81.

Cabral qualified for the final after running the third fastest time in the first round on Monday at 8:21.96. He clocked 8:26.37 in the US Olympic Trials back in June to take the third qualifying spot behind Evan Jager and Hilary Bor, both of which made the final. Jager won the silver medal - the first American to medal since 1984 with a time of 8:04.28, while Bor finished right in front of Cabral in eighth place.

Kate Grace (Yale ’11) advanced to the semifinals with a time of 1:59.96. Grace ranked sixth in the third semifinal. She currently ranks 16th overall and will compete in the finals tomorrow night.

Bruno Hortelano (Cornell ’14) competed in the semifinals of the 200-meter for Spain. Hortelano narrowly missed advancing to the finals, clocking a 20.16 in the event to finish 10th-overall. The top-eight moved on.

Rudy Winkler (Cornell ’17) made his Olympic debut after winning the U.S. Olympic Trial in June. Winkler finished eighth in the Group A of the Athletic competition and did not advance.

In the qualifying rounds of the men's javelin, Sean Furey (Dartmouth '04) did not advance after finishing 35th with a throw of 72.61m.

This is the second Olympic appearance for Furey. The U.S. haven't had a medalist in the event since Bill Schmidt took silver in 1972.

Abbey D’Agostino (Dartmouth ’14), who was inadvertently tripped during her heat of the women’s 5K, will not compete in the Friday’s final because of a torn ACL.

Water Polo

Ashleigh Johnson (Princeton ’17) and Team USA advance to the gold medal match after defeating Italy in the semifinals. Johnson made eight saves in the win. The U.S. will face Italy in the finals which are slated for August 19 at 2:30 p.m.

Sailing

The events today were cancelled due to the weather.
